Have you ever stood at the edge of a precipice, your dreams stretching out before you, only to feel an invisible force holding you back? That force is fear, and it's the silent dream killer that haunts many of us, especially those in the professional world who are yearning to break free from the corporate chains.
I engage with business professionals daily who are utterly exhausted by the relentless grind of their jobs. They're tired of dancing to the tune of someone else's success, pouring their sweat and tears into a company that doesn't reciprocate their loyalty, only to be left vulnerable when the tides of business shift through downsizing, mergers, or acquisitions.
Perhaps you're one of these individuals. You've entertained the thought of steering your own ship, of launching a business that aligns with your personal vision. Yet, despite this burning desire, you hesitate. You're not alone. The vast majority of aspiring entrepreneurs let their dreams fizzle out before they've even struck the match. And the culprit? Fear.
Fear is a double-edged sword. It's a survival mechanism that signals danger, protecting us from harm. But I'm not referring to the fear that keeps us safe; I'm talking about the paralyzing fear that shackles our potential—the fear of failure, of financial insecurity, of change, or even success. Sometimes, it's not even our own fear but the projected anxieties of those closest to us, like our partners, parents, or friends. Their resistance to change, their discomfort with ambition, can manifest as subtle sabotage.
This fear is a thief. It robs you of the courage to chase after your dreams. It whispers doubts until you're convinced that trying is futile. But is that the legacy you want to leave behind? A life of wondering 'what if'? I, for one, would rather face the sting of failure than the hollow ache of regret.
Fear will always linger in the background, mingling with excitement at the prospect of change. The key is to ensure that fear doesn't overshadow the thrill of chasing your dreams. Remember, fear has killed more dreams than failure ever will.
So, how do we combat this adversary? Here are three strategies to manage your fear and reclaim your dreams, particularly if those dreams involve entrepreneurship.
First, recognize fear for what it truly is: False Expectations Appearing Real. How often do our worst fears come to pass? Rarely, if ever. Our brains can't distinguish between imagined outcomes and reality. If you believe you'll fail, your brain will accept that as truth. But the reality is, you don't know unless you try. To shift your perspective, you must change your beliefs, and that starts with changing your thoughts.
Second, fear often stems from a lack of knowledge. Many businesses falter because their founders leaped without looking. If you're aiming for lofty goals, you likely don't possess the necessary knowledge—yet. The antidote to fear is education. Learning and understanding your field diminishes fear and mitigates risk.
That's why, for those interested in business coaching, we offer a six-week program designed to equip you with the knowledge you need to succeed. This comprehensive education can significantly reduce fear and the perceived risk of starting your own business.
Lastly, embrace the 80% rule. When making significant decisions, like starting a business, waiting for 100% certainty is a fool's errand. Once you've armed yourself with knowledge and feel 80% ready, make the leap. Dwelling on that final 20% is where doubts breed and dreams die.
